Yearbooks have always been a part of Carla’s life. She was editor-in-chief of both her junior and senior high schools’ yearbooks in the LA area, and editor-in-chief of the La Cumbre yearbook at UC Santa Barbara. Her first teaching job in Santa Barbara included—you guessed it—yearbook. Her husband’s job brought her to Northern California where, along with raising 4 boys, she advised two more great yearbook programs, taught English, Leadership, and was co-Activities Director. She understands the difficulties of advising a yearbook and managing very demanding and diverse teaching assignments!
Carla’s passion for the yearbook process was key to motivating her students to produce many award-winning yearbooks, including many CSPA medalists, a top 5 finish in the Best in Show competition at the JEA/NSPA national convention, and a Pacemaker Finalist.
After 15 years in the classroom, joining the Varsity Yearbook (formerly Herff Jones) family was a natural step. Her enthusiasm and passion are obvious when she’s working with schools. She’s always available to teach and train, support and validate, listen and laugh. In fact, she believes that laughter is key to a successful yearbook program.
Life outside of Yearbook Land for Carla is all about family. She and her husband live in San Jose and love it when the boys and their families stop in for a visit and a big family meal. Besides spoiling her five grandchildren, Carla loves spending time on the beach, exploring and photographing the beauty of California, reading, reading, reading, and of course, SF Giants baseball.
